The Not Tale (Funeral) by Caroline Bergvall
AnalysisThe title "The Not Tale (Funeral)" implies to me that the poem is about a story of a funeral possibly that is fiction. The poem is about a scenery, a scenery with many different elements and actions taking place. Bergvall stated "Now how a site is laid like this". This lets me know that the writer is referring to a scenery in the poem that is apparently unusual. "Now the ground agast, nor how the fire, first with straw, and then with drye, and then with grene and then with gold". Bergvall is painting a picture of nature. A bright, fire blazing scenery with grenes and golds sparkling. The poem is written in the form of a story as though the writer is telling this tale with excitement and amazement, almost as if she's seeing the place as she tells the tale.

Literary DevicesThe literary device that is used in this poem is repetition. For example, "Nor what, nor how, nor how, nor what she spak..." is an example of repetition because the same words are being repeated over and over again. The purpose of the literary device in the poem is to emphasize how serious the writer was as they were saying these specific lines. The literary devices is being applied all throughout the poem from the first to the last stanza.
