Cody by Nova Venerable
AnalysisThe title "Cody" implies that the poem is about a male named Cody. The poem is about how a young lady wishes the best for her disabled little brother when she goes away for college. Venerable stated "When I see him, I wonder how could God know that diabetes peels twenty seven years of life like dead skin". Venerable is expressing how one doesn't quite understand why bad things happen to good people and how we never know what life will throw at us, we just have to be ready. "I watch him play Hungry Hungry Hippos, see his body jitters like a wind-up toy when he asks me to play with him". Venerable is painting a picture of love, real unconditional love, and how it's supposed to feel, sound and look like. The poem is written in the form of a letter to one’s self about stress and the sadness that is being felt. The theme of the poem is man vs. self. It's do you stay and help your family or do you try and do better so you can help them escape the issue in the long run?

Literary DevicesThe literary device that is used within this poem are similes. For example "My youngest brother was born with my grandfather's nose round like spools of thread" is an example of a simile because it's comparing her little brothers nose to a spool of thread with the word like. "The purpose of these literary devices in the poem is to express how much she is going to miss her little brother when she's gone and how she hopes that he will remember her when she comes back. The literary devices are being applied throughout the poem. For instance, she says "his body jitters like a wind-up toy". That's just one example of the literary devices that are being displayed throughout the poem.
