Modernismo Movement
The Modernismo Movement began in Latin America in the late 1800's, and later to Spain. Those who practiced Modernismo set their poems in exotic landscapes to show materialism of everyday life. The movements developer, Jose Marti, published many works of poetry. Modernismo was one of the first Latin American movements to influence the Spanish Peninsula, and continued to do so throughout the twentieth century, although the movement was over by 1920.
Rosario by Jose Marti
PoemRosario,
In you think, in your hair That the shadow world of envy, And I put a point in my life in them And I wanted to dream that you were mine. And me the earth with your eyes, Elevations? Oh my quest!? so high That arrogant or miserable anger blushes Encendiólos the human creature. Living:? Know die so afflicts me This unfortunate look, this well fierce, And all my soul be reflected, And looking without faith, faith I die! |
AnalysisThe title "Rosario" entitles that this poem is being written to someone, possibly a loved one. The poem is about someone who longs for someone else's love. In the poem, Marti says "And I wanted to dream that you were mine... oh my eagerness". The writer is expressing the love for this one person or thing that they long for however he knows that that one person or thing isn't going to be his. Marti paints a picture of angry love, someone wanting something or someone so bad that it angers them they can't have them. The way the poem is written, it is in the form of a letter, as though it's a goodbye letter to what they've been longing for all this time. The poem portrays a conflict with ones self. "An all my soul be reflected, and looking for without faith, faith I'm dying" was written in the poem. Obviously the writer is having a man vs. self conflict. Do they continue to suffer by loving or do they suffer alone?
